Sterling Pharma Solutions is a CDMO specialising in the development and manufacture of innovator APIs from grams to tonnes.

The growing and highly fragmented global innovator API market provides huge opportunities for Sterling, however as a relatively new name to the API space following a management buy-out, Sterling quite simply needed to build its brand profile to meet its ambitious commercial objectives.

In order to attract interest from big, midsized and emerging pharma companies in Europe, North America and Japan, Sterling needed a strong, thought-provoking and memorable visual identity and a sustained and targeted trade media campaign to build its reputation in the industry.

A sterling idea

Following our research into the organisation, its customers and identifying its key differentiators we began experimenting with concepts and sketches. Playing on the definition of the word ‘sterling’ we developed a concept to position Sterling as a first-class CDMO in everything they do. A range of Sterling stamps was created so brand touchpoints can be sealed with a Sterling Stamp of quality.

A brand workshop with the Sterling team provided insight into the brand personality and the key differentiators that set the company apart from its competitors. This allowed us to create a set of brand values unique to Sterling combined with cohesive messaging concepts and a tone of voice that would support the company’s key objectives and ensure a consistent brand personality.

The ramarketing team put together a really engaging and enjoyable brand workshop which got the whole team involved. This generated some great outputs around our brand values and value proposition which will play a key part as we continue to develop the Sterling brand.

A fresh look

Sterling required a new bank of imagery to reflect its first class messaging. The photography style we developed was fresh, friendly and approachable. When combined with the new confident tone of voice it gave Sterling an updated brand style which better communicated its brand positioning.

Through our experimentations we explored different uses of the hexagon shape featured in the Sterling logo. This developed into a key brand asset as it reflected the multi-faceted nature of Sterling along with the agile approach the team offers.

The hexagon shapes inspired the navigation style on the Sterling homepage with a stepping stone menu designed to guide the user through the services. The menu was designed to respond to user interactions with changing opacities and colours.

Colour palette

It was important for Sterling to showcase different facets of the company so we developed a secondary colour palette around the four main sections on the website. This acted as a subtle visual tool to guide users from one area of the site to another whilst clearly differentiating the sections.

CPhI drinks event

To celebrate Sterling’s expertise in hazardous chemistry and hazard evaluation we designed a drinks event around hazardous cocktails. The event hosted on the Sterling stand at CPhI Frankfurt brought customers and the Sterling team together to enjoy canapes, hazardous cocktails and test tube sweets.

Team ramarketing have brought to life many aspects of our business in the market place and their brand workshop really hit the spot making us think very carefully about our values and culture.

Through a targeted and multi-stranded PR and thought-leadership campaign, team ramarketing has been raising Sterling’s profile and awareness of its expertise across Europe and the US. Using a combination of press releases and though leadership articles, roundtable contributions and comment opportunities to generate a sustained presence in target publications, ramarketing has started to position the Sterling team as the experts in handling hazardous substances and catering for innovator API development and manufacture requirements.

Branding and design

Working closely with the Sterling team, ramarketing developed a strong and memorable brand identity alongside designing and building a new website to give the company an impressive presence both online and offline. The brand has since been applied to various touchpoints including slide decks, brochures, social media graphics, e-signatures and event invitations to ensure brand consistency.
